School of Engineering

The Transnet School of Engineering (SoE) is a well-established and reputable training institution that focuses on the delivery of various competencies in the engineering industry through dedicated leadership, teamwork and well trained and experienced facilitators. The SoE aims to provide all Transnet divisions with skilled people, with the relevant competencies in various engineering fields so that they can perform their functions at the organisational level and within the appropriate timing to support Transnet’s human capital strategy.

The SoE offers a variety of courses and programmes, which range from semi-skilled workforce competencies, apprenticeships, artisans, projects, engineers to logistics and supply chain right through to supervisory and leadership development competencies. The institution has a primary responsibility to develop and enhance key technical, maintenance and engineering competencies that are critical to sustain Transnet’s requirements. The SoE also boasts an impressive external/private client base in South Africa and Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, namely: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Botswana and Mozambique.

The institution is quality and safety compliant. The Institution is ISO 9001: 2008 compliant.  It is also OHSAS 18001 Certified.   It has a long history in engineering related training with accreditation by the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA), Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services SETA (Merseta), Services Sector Education and Training Authority (SSETA) and other Sector Training Authorities.

 It has been recognised for excellent work in the engineering training related field by means of various awards, which include amongst others:

  • Africa Rail: Best Skills Service Provider - 2010 & 2011 Winner

  • BHP: Best Skills Provider - 2012 Winner

  • BHP: Best Innovative Training Provider – 2013 2nd Runner-up

  • NOSCAR Award – 2012 Winner

The Institution, furthermore, has excellent relationships and partnerships with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) such as General Electric (GE), Electro Motive Diesel (EMD), local Further Education and Training (FET) and Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) Institutions around the country.  The institution also has a Coach Lab Innovation Hub.  The institution is also registered as an assessment centre for Artisan Trade Testing in various trades.
